In a feat rarely seen in modern baseball, sophomore
Leonardo Alvarez recorded two pitching victories in one day as the Queensborough Community College Tigers swept a CUNYAC doubleheader versus the Borough of Manhattan Community College on Monday.
In the first game of the day, the Tigers were down 7-5 when freshman catcher
Gabriel Espinal connected for a three-run home run to put Queensborough ahead for good, as they hung on for a 9-7 victory. Alvarez would record the win as he pitched three strong innings in relief, giving up only one hit and zero earned runs, while striking out four batters.
In game two, with the score tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Queensborough would plate four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run by sophomore
Sean Lynch, putting the Tigers up 10-6 heading into the seventh inning. However, with two outs, and freshman
James Cummins just one out away from a complete game victory, BMCC would hit a three-run home run to tie the game at 10. The Panthers would then add one more to take a 11-10 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th inning, after
Leonardo Alvarez recorded the final out of the inning in relief. In the bottom of the inning, Queensborough would quickly tie the game at 11, before
Sean Lynch would once again come through in the clutch, with a base loaded walk-off single to deep center field to give the Tigers the 12-11 victory, and a sweep of the twin bill.
Though he only pitched one third of an inning in relief,
Leonardo Alvarez would record his second win of the day, a feat rarely seen in today's game. With the wins, the Tigers improve to 2-6 overall and 2-6 in CUNYAC play. The two wins are also the first in the head coaching career of interim head coach, Tyler Reynolds.
The Tigers will return to action on Tuesday, when they will face another CUNYAC foe in Bronx Community College. The single 9-inning game will be played at 3:30 p.m. at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn.
