For the seventh time in eight seasons, the Queensborough Community College Tigers are conference champions, defeating Kingsborough in four sets to win the 2023 CUNYAC Community College Women's Volleyball Championship.
On their home court, the Tigers turned in a solid performance over the course of the day to secure their 10th conference title in program history. Prior to the victory over Kingsborough, Queensborough advanced to the final match after sweeping BMCC in a rematch of last season's tournament finale.
Freshman
Michelle Liu was named the championship's Most Valuable Player. She finished the day with 13 kills, 12 service aces and 12 digs.
Isabel Torres handed out 55 assists across the pair of matches, while
Ashley Mateo produced 18 kills, five digs and one block.
In the championship match, Queensborough raced out to a 9-1 lead in the opening set, cruising to a 25-17 victory led by four kills and one block from Mateo.
In the second set, Kingsborough, who advanced to the tournament final following a 3-0 win over Hostos, scored six of the first nine points in the frame. Following a Queensborough timeout, the Tigers seized control of the set, outscoring the Wave 14-5 to open up a 17-11 advantage. Kingsborough got within a point (21-20), but Queensborough scored the final four points of the game to win 25-20 and take a 2-0 series edge.
Tied 17-17 in the third set while facing elimination, Kingsborough avoided the sweep and kept its title hopes alive. The Wave recorded four straight points and did not look back, holding off the Tigers with a score of 25-22.
Kingsborough rode its momentum into the fourth set, taking an early 8-6 lead. Queensborough responded with a 9-2 run, highlighted by five straight points, to go out in front 15-10. The Wave got within one (19-18) late, but the Tigers held off Kingsborough for a 25-21 victory to clinch conference bragging rights once again.
Cynthia Saravia Reyes recorded 23 digs in the win, while Torres finished with a double-double of 30 assists and 16 digs.
For Kingsborough, Victoria Cook finished with 16 kills and 18 digs, while Noarie Proverbs turned in seven kills and 13 digs. For their effort throughout the day, the tandem landed a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Queensborough will now turn its attention to the NJCAA Region XV Championship, slated to begin on Thursday (Oct. 26) against Nassau.
