For the third consecutive season, the Queensborough Community College women's volleyball team is City University of New York (CUNY) champions! It is the eighth league title in the past nine seasons and the twelfth in the past fifteen seasons played for the Tigers program that has become dominant within CUNY in the past decade plus.
In the semifinals, the Tigers swept the Caimans of Hostos Community College by a score of three sets to none, setting up a season rubber match between Queensborough and the Red Hawks of LaGuardia Community College in the championship game. Coming into the title match the teams had split the season series, with both teams controlling their home court with decisive wins in the regular season. The Tigers swept the first regular season match three sets to none, while the Red Hawks held serve, winning on their home court, three sets to one.
Monday's title match was a back and forth affair with Queensborough taking the first set. The Tigers then had their way in the second set, winning decisively and taking control of match, or so they thought. LaGuardia had other plans though and the Red Hawks did not back down and battled back to take the third set, forcing what was an ultra competitive fourth set. With the Red Hawks seemingly in control of the set with a 24-22 lead and on the verge of forcing a fifth and final set, the Tigers showed their championship determination by outscoring the Red Hawks five points to one down the stretch to close out the match with an exciting 27-25 triumph in set four to once again claim the CUNY Championship on their home court.
For her efforts, freshman
Genesis Benavides was named the tournament Most Valuable Player, while sophomore
Samantha Mateo and freshman
Aryam Perez Capellan were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
The champion Tigers will now turn their attention to the 2025 Region XV Tournament where they will be #7 seed. Queensborough will travel into Manhattan to take on the second seeded Tigers of the Fashion Institute of Technology in a quarterfinal match on Thursday, October 30th.
